SIMRAN KAUR MUNDI & GURICKK MAAN’S WEDDING | THE BARADARI PALACE, PUNJAB, INDIA.
Around 8am on a cold January morning I received an incoming Whatsapp video call from an unknown number… “Are you available to film my wedding in India next week?” the caller asked. In a pre-pandemic world when international travel was simple, the answer was of course a resounding “YES!”.
After some lengthy discussions about the planned events and the coverage needed Rachel and I set up securing our Visas for the trip. Anyone who has been to India, even as a tourist, knows about the complicated Visa process so we knew that getting work Visas with less than 3 days notice was not going to be easy. Thankfully our clients were able to fast track the process and after 3 separate trips to the VFS Centre in Birmingham and 1 visit to the Consulate, we finally had the paperwork we needed.
Our flight left for Delhi the following day and after we disembarked and had a much needed rest in a nearby hotel, we continued our journey in India with a 6 hour taxi ride to Patiala, Punjab where the wedding events were due to take place.
What followed was some of the most intense 4 days (and nights!) of pretty much non-stop shooting and very little sleep, but definitely one of the most incredible experiences of our careers so far.
The couple hired one of India’s top wedding planning companies FB Celebrations to orchestrate their celebrations. Bhavnesh Sawhney and his team created a surreal experience for the couple and their guests, organising everything with just 2 weeks’ notice – a phenomenal feat indeed! Despite the short planning time frame it was clear just how much thought the couple and their families had put into each function as their celebrations felt like a reflection of their personalities.
A personal highlight was during the Sufi night when the Groom’s father, legendary Punjabi singer Gurdas Maan took to the stage for an impromptu performance of “Sajna ve Sajna” much to everyone’s delight. The week continued with more celebrity performances from the couple’s friends and family, including Harshdeep Kaur, Bad Shah, and Mika Singh. It’s often the case that the unplanned moments of a wedding day turn out to be the most memorable and this was certainly no exception. With this in mind it seemed fitting to start their film with this scene.
To film a Luxury Destination Wedding in India has always been a “bucket list” item for us, so it was a real privilege to film a wedding of this scale at such an incredible location. We cannot wait to return again soon!
